Why Richmond Clients Are Choosing Threading Over Microblading

I must confess—over the years, I’ve gently talked many clients out of microblading. Not because it doesn’t work, but because I truly believe natural beauty, when nurtured patiently, is more sustainable and far more rewarding than committing to a tattooed solution on your face.

For me, the reason is simple. Brows are not just hair; they frame expressions, emotions, and identity. And once you commit to pigment, you’re committing to a look—sometimes before giving your natural brows a fair chance.

If you think I chose threading 18 years ago by chance rather than intention, you’d be wrong. From the very beginning, I felt that naturally groomed human brows—shaped with care and precision—bring out a kind of beauty that no dye or artificial product can truly replicate.

Threading appealed to me because it is honest. There are no chemicals, no heat, and no shortcuts. Over time, it helps reduce breakage, supports healthier regrowth patterns, and improves the appearance of density. Most importantly, it respects the skin and the natural brow structure.

Today, nearly one in five clients who walk into my threading studio in Richmond come with similar concerns: sparse or thin brows, uneven growth, undefined shapes, or brows that were over-plucked years ago and never professionally shaped again. And I understand—it’s not easy to find a skilled brow artist. Not just in Richmond, but across Virginia.

What I’ve seen, time and again, is that with consistent threading and mindful shaping, many of these clients feel confident enough to let go of the idea of microblading altogether. Their brows may not be “drawn on,” but they are theirs—natural, expressive, and balanced.

Of course, threading cannot create new hair where follicles don’t exist. But it can absolutely maximize what you already have. With the right attention to the brow head, arch, and tail, the illusion of fullness improves so much that brow thinning stops being a daily concern.

I’ve witnessed remarkable results over multiple sessions—how symmetry improves, how expressions soften, and how brows slowly settle into a shape that truly suits the face rather than overpowering it.

One of the biggest reasons many clients choose threading over microblading is the fear of commitment. Microblading locks you into a look for the long term, and understandably, that makes people hesitant. With threading, there’s freedom—to adjust, refine, and evolve as your face and preferences change.

That said, I’m not against microblading. It certainly has its place. If you have bald patches with no follicles, alopecia, scarring, or if you prefer a very defined brow look without regular grooming, microblading can be helpful. It works well for those who know exactly what they want and are comfortable with the permanence.

Conclusion

I’m not here to dismiss microblading—but I do encourage trying threading first. Give your natural brows the opportunity to be nurtured and shaped before committing to pigment. In my experience, confidence often comes not from creating something artificial, but from enhancing what already belongs to you, through discreet brow shaping with threading.
